Why whatsapp? I don’t want to go to whatsapp to set reminders. Is this a common usecase for people?

WhatsApp is opened everyday by hundreds of millions of people. It's already installed on every-phone. The fatigue to open up a frequently used app is smaller than a rarely used app.
