I never really got into Spotify but I've used YouTube music for the same purpose. I go through phases where I let the discovery algorithm show me things then at some point I discover, say, the Super Furry Animals (try saying that and not having people accuse you of being a furry [1]) or Yellow Magic Orchestra. Then I listen to a bunch of albums, get an understanding of their body of work, find some related artists, do a lot of reading, etc.

Then I go back to using the reccomender and repeat the cycle.
