Ask HN: Unconventional E-Reader Solution
3 points by racyred44 552 days ago
Hello all, I am making this post here, as opposed to other forums like Reddit, as I am seeking a solution that might become unconventional and wanted quality answers. I want to acquire an e-reader, that is an electronic device that can be used to read books, and is portable. I need it to have a screen that does minimal damage to my eyes, as I am going to be constantly using it. Which maybe means it cannot emit blue light or similar things. I also want it to have physical buttons. It also has to be durable, and something I can use for the rest of my life. USB-C would be nice. It doesn't have to display pictures or color, it doesn't need have an E-ink screen. Does anyone of you hackermen know something that would fit these criteria? I am thinking something like a those old palm devices, PDAs, but I don't have access to anything like Ebay and need to be able to buy it from Amazon. It doesn't have to be thin and small, I would like it thick and sturdy, which is why I was thinking about those palm devices being a viable option. I am willing for the solution to be very unconventional.

You didn't specify budget. I think laptop form-factor is impossible to beat ergonomically, so color e-ink laptop -- then you can turn the page with the spacebar.

eg, Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Twist HANDS ON: Color E-Ink and OLED in one Laptop

It's too big to fit in a small messenger bag. Edit: and looks ugly as well.
Buy a bigger bag; it looks like a laptop, because it is a laptop.
If it looked like an IBM ThinkPad I would have bought it.
I would be spoiled for options if I lived in the United States, I really doubt I would be able to find this in the UAE or India. Edit: I can't even find it on eBay.
