As soon as money is in play, greedy people will start gaming the system. The anonymous guy in Nebraska won't have a chance, even if he is interested.

tl;dr: well intentioned, but it isn't gonna work.

Specially when GitHub gatekeeps users from accepting sponsorships, even if you have stuff published for over a decade.
