Karpathy would not have felt obliged to mini-rant about it if he hadn't seen it, and I've been following this space from the beginning and have also seen it way too often. Laypeople misunderstand this constantly, but far too many "AI engineers" on blogs, HN, and within my company talk about hallucinations in a way that makes it clear that they do not have a strong grounding in the fundamentals of this tech and think hallucinations will be cured someday as models get better.
