Chicago is, sadly, very segregated, and if you exclude the south and west side where frankly no white collar workers live you’d be looking at much more comparable numbers. I don’t say this to downplay the tragedy of 500+ lives lost, but if you choose to live in Chicago you know that practically speaking it’s as safe as any other.

Not a resident of Chicago, but I visit frequently. Everybody knows where to be and where not to be. If you find trouble in Chicago, then chances are you went looking for it.
