I highly recommend hooking your kid up with pico-8. It's a simple little 'fantasy' console with tons of tools to make gamedev streamlined. It's really caught on fire with the gamedev community and you can tell there was a lot of pent up creativity out there that was sick of the complexity of modern gamedev and just wanted a tight little environment to make simple indie games with.
