I dunno. We can pick up bowling pins pretty easily. Why not chess pieces.
We are also moving away from traditional bowling pins because the mechanisms are too expensive and hard to maintain, and moving towards pins that are attached to strings, to cheaply reset
Bowling pinsetters are rather infamously dangerous machines and operate with all kinds of guards to keep meaty appendages out.
For one, chess pieces vary in shape and height.
