Mostly for performance. It's ludicrously expensive in general to check and upsize as required each operation. It's wiser for performance computing to have the developer decides if they want to pay the price and use suitable libraries as needed. |

I'm not saying the status-quo is wrongheaded, and I see no obvious way to solve it -- just an observation.
