Ask HN: How can I grow beyond being an engineer that just completes tasks?

I’ve been given the feedback that I do an excellent job completing the tasks I’ve been given, but that I could grow further by identifying proactively identifying issues and proposing solutions. It makes sense in theory and I really admire other engineers that are able to do this. But I really struggle with this. If I can identify problems at all, they often are low impact problems or I can’t think of a solution. For engineers that are good at this, what does your thought process look like? |

Personally I could never make any meaningful improvement over any enterprise financial offering, but for example give me a personal music player to work on, and will make the best of it in the galaxy, even without any guidance...
