There were 3 stages to this. 1. There is no IC progression, so engineers go into management for promotion. 2. There is IC progression, with roughly standardized expectations/naming at the various levels. 3. The standard levels were then exploited by companies to under-pay employees, by over-titling them (title in lieu of compensation). This piece is about the final/current abuse of title stage. |
