As I understand it they come from Muslim heritage, from the 700 years of Al-Andalus in the Iberian peninsula. The word clearly points to "Persian". I know them from Spain, but I'm not surprised that they came to Brazil from Portugal, and I assume they are popular in many places around the Mediterranean and the Middle East. |
