My wife and I live in a Wardway kit home from 1929. The vast majority of homes in our city built between 1900-1940 are kit homes. This is likely true for any residential (non-urban) of that era. If you pay attention today you'll see that even spec houses are built off a standard set of plans from just a few sources. So even where timber and custom builders were more available they probably ended up building off a subset of common plans for the region based on weather and customer preferences. Someday after all the land developers are gone on to the next iteration, we'll have the same revelry about spec houses. |
