The article's title is "Why I Prefer Exceptions to Error Values". It literally tells you that it's biased.
You can hold a preference yet remain unbias.

It’s biased because the author failed to acknowledge any of the conflicting test examples

A preference is just a bias with a more positive connotation.

The author acknowledges their bias in the title.
