The realtime patchset and prerequisites has taken something like ten years or more to be split and merged into the mainline kernel. It's an essential piece of for low latency audio work, and has always been a bit of a pain to got working when distributions decide that it's not worth it to make available, so having it available in the mainline tree will significantly reduce the headaches involved in using it.
