Oh I agree - Montreal is definitely a nicer city from at tourist perspective and frankly from a live-ability most likely. However tourism doesn't really translate to economic power - and most of that is predicated on government decisions and perceived instability from the separation vote. and in the 80s all the banks HQ's relocated to Toronto. Montreal was the most important city in Canada in the 80s for minute ... now it trails behind Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver. I don't disagree - separatists don't care because they would be trying to grab power at all costs. The rest of the population would be the ones along for the ride. Also worth reminding Brexit was reverting to a former country state, quebec separatism would be wholly new uncharted waters. |
