I don't know what the answer is, but I can tell you that your concerns are legitimate. Even in the year 2000 when I was in college one of my friends had a roommate that played the MMORPG Asheron's Call with basically all of their free time. We never saw the person doing anything else. When we came back for our second year of school, that person was nowhere to be found.

I guess I can safely recommend that you seek help from professionals and not randos on the Internet. Or maybe get help from people who have been down the same road before. Either way, yes, you must do something.
