Quite a good survey, touches on many of the direct factors, but misses the underlying issues of social status and value of parenthood and children. Children are not wanted in society. How many businesses have creches or play areas for their employees' children? How many restaurants actively encourage families with children? How many downtown streets have playgrounds? How much status does having two children rather than one get you? (Answer: sympathy, not status.) It's no wonder that many people are choosing to do other things. Until the culture changes, the trend will continue. |
