In many countries sentences are much shorter. Life imprisonment is extremely rare or nearly impossible. As such those don't get that big effort in overturning as prisoners are anyway free after much shorter time.
The US has a boner for retribution and punishment for the sake of punishment. Its one of the reasons we have the largest prison population on the planet
