How did you format the drive to avoid things like symbolic link issues?

... It's formatted as APFS, but I believe I was using this approach back before APFS was released, and as such it would have been HFS+. The only non-standard thing I do with it, is that it's case-sensitive.

What symbolic link issues would you be expecting, exactly?
