I don't think Qualcomm or any of the current market leaders will be the first to do a big RISC-V push. While dealing with the ARM company might be a hassle having an exclusive ISA limits the competition which is good for business. When the first one moves and the software is created for it there are more opportunities for competitors. Qualcomm doesn't want to create the invitation but also wants to make sure there is a place at the party for them. RISC-V will probably get it's first big adoption through some new or shifting industry creating their own chip. Like how ARM got into phones or Amazon started to use their own ARM chips. This guarantees all the infrastructure can be build and used in the future. |
