After reading the article it touches on moot points for most graphic designers. The demographic Adobe is aiming for does not care if Gimp is open source and you can modify it.The average graphic designer has 0 care for "less storage space" taken up or open source and wants a rock solid product with years of support, guides, and guaranteed straightforward methods of accomplishing multitudes of different effects.

Yup, and not to mention the myriad of strange UX in GIMP that the devs won’t budge on, like the whole layer boundary situation. There’s a reason literally no other image editor handles layer boundaries the way GIMP does.
A lot of people have asked them to stop using the name too. The devs seem very stuck in their ways.
