Ask HN: Service that provides updates about subjects of interest

I had a situation recently that a business partner I was interacting with on several projects ended up indicted (nothing related to our projects, some other shady stuff that he was doing). I found out about that accidentally, but then searching the Internet a bit, I easily found that I could know that something is happening months or even years ago.

This event made me wonder if there is a service where I can put in a few company names, or personal names (business leaders), and get updated if something new pops up in news. Similarly to how news aggregators work: "I'm interested in pop culture", but way more granular, for example: "I'm interested in a band Superorganism".

Anyone know some service that solves this problem?

Google offered "alerts" - email notifications when new web content appears relevant to a search string.
