In a vertical where the barrier to entry is not high, being first to market with something simple that people can extend can create a decent-sized moat. The downside is that much of the code in WP core is effectively un-modernizable, given how much depends on things working a certain way. Key classes and functions haven’t been meaningfully updated in over a decade. |
