I believe this can be implemented via XMPP's presence protocol [0]. IIRC this is what WhatsApp did, and sharing your current status was the original purpose of WhatsApp. Messaging and calls were added later. 0: https://xmpp.org/rfcs/rfc6121.html#presence |
