You could do that, and it'd still be POSIX-shell comptible:

    loadenv() {
        case "$-" in
            *a*) source ./.env ;;
            *) set -a; source ./.env; set +a ;;
        esac
    }

Although I have yet to see a long shellscript utilise `set -a` globally :)
