From a structural engineering point of view, this is because of the extra 1G of force keeping the rows together, but nothing keeps the columns together. Since bricks have some tensile strength, but mortar (the 'glue' between rows and columns) has ~none, that means that, if you must have lines of weakness, you would prefer they be horizontal than vertical. |
