These things, in a broad, general sense, are a coordination problem. We need lots of people to act cooperatively with a high degrees of foresight. As a species, this is something we’ve almost never done. When we do it, it’s usually because it arises naturally out of the actions of self-interested individuals. I think the ai hype is founded on this problem, i.e. the observation that humans have continually failed to solve big problems makes the idea of a miracle machine that can solve them for us extremely appealing. ai companies know this so they do lots of sneaky things to cultivate the illusion that they’re on the cusp of such a machine, when human level intelligence that’s actually usable in most domains is still easy 25-30 years off. |
