I’m finishing a phd now and this is very good advice, especially point number 1. There are a lot of good, technically fascinating ideas out there. Only a subset of those are interesting to other researchers in your field. As an early career researcher, the first priority is finding projects that other people will care about. It’s very very important to find an advisor who knows what others care about. Science is inherently social. |
