If you purchase the discounted ad version. Pay the full price or the $20 difference whenever you feel like and you don't get any ads. You can even send them a message saying "hey, I didn't know there would be ads" and the support will remove them for you.

The entire reason this macabre charade of "ads on dumb device" even exists is because of the "ecosystem" play companies use. Buy 'book' and book reading device on Amazon, then pull in money from advertisers on the Kindle store by showing paid readers their ads.
