The leading use for blockchain is obviously cryptocurrency but even this can be achieved by other means. See IOTA.

So I'd say the one unique thing blockchain has achieved is motivating a large number of operators to consume significant amounts of energy for no real, demonstrative benefit to society.

In other words, it is a solution looking for a problem.
