I'm pretty sure that the subjective experience of colors is mostly due to a combination of the overlapping ranges of wavelengths our eye's cones respond to (how similar different colors appear to us), and associative recall ("grass green"). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cone_cell Note that subjective perception of color is only loosely related to the actual frequencies of light involved.
