Chinese also describes time in terms of “in front” (前) and “behind” (后), and it’s the opposite of what you might expect: the past is “in front”, the future is “behind”. I find the concept fascinating. It makes sense: what’s in front of you can be directly seen, much like you can remember and “see” the past. But the future is unknown, like something behind you that you can’t see. |
