Warpinator in Linux Mint works nice in this regard. Works in local networks, discovers it's peers and has mobile clients.

Warpinator works really well between Linux systems, it's like magic But add windows computer and it's a little bit of a mixed bag, you need to open ports, jungle the firewall and .. the magic is gone, the USB stick is out.
Interesting, apparently there are implementations (unofficial, beta) for Android, iOS and Windows.
