Does it have to be a MUD instead of a single-player RPG? Planescape: Torment is an old isometric game that has excellent writing, IMO. It's in the Baldur's Gate family of Infinity Engine games, but unlike its cousins, it has a very strong focus on narrative and almost no combat.
