Just stop relying on Google – for ANYTHING
8 points by mykehunt 859 days ago
I hate to admit it, but I've recently started using Yandex for searches. When searching for very specific topics (combined with my ADD), I've found that a Google search can be almost more distracting from my goal than browsing on TikTok.

Yesterday, I updated my Bard account to Gemini Advanced (fool me once, fool me twice). Bard was decent as a complement to comparing or going back and forth in conversations with ChatGPT. Somehow, they made it worse. While using Gemini, I also reverted back to old habits and was using Google search again. I feel like it gets worse and worse every day, not so much exponentially but like the square-cube law (The square-cube law, in the context of ship sizes, often referred to in naval architecture and marine engineering, is a principle based on the fact that as a ship's dimensions are increased, its volume and weight grow disproportionately compared to its surface area.)

Or, as Google gets twice as greedy, they get 4x as bad.

Agreed. Been using DDG for years now. Recently I switched to Kagi. It is best imo. Is is easy to permanently elevate domain in your searches or lower/blocklist it.
I'm finding out that reddit and YouTube are proving much more useful and overall better information than Google.com

This is not a good sign for the king of search.

Funnily enough, the last few years of my Google usage, one of my most-popular search restraints was `site:reddit.com` [because reddit's own search feature has been TERRIBLE for over a decade], regardless of topic [technical, or not].

Last summer, I finally added reddit to my DNS blacklist, too.

Try out Perplexity. It's really awesome for search with it's RAG feature.
Perplexity.AI [for anybody wondering]

I have been using DDG for years, and Perplexity for one year.

*.google.com [etc.] are all blacklisted on my personal DNS host, as unnecessary relics of past two decades.

> It's really awesome for search

Is it good for anything other than search? I don't need search that much.
