Ask HN: Are there any alternative front ends for HN?
5 points by monkhood 880 days ago
I realise a lot of people here like the minimalist look of HN but I think I would appreciate a bit more refined user experience on HN.

I'm not just asking about reading HN, but also posting, commenting etc.

Is having an alternative UI even allowed by HN? I mean both technically (e.g. cross-origin, authentication) but also officially?

How about Modern for Hacker News: https://www.modernhn.com/ - available for both Gecko and Chromium-based browsers.

There's also a Wikipedia version: https://www.modernwiki.app/ - tho now it just slightly redefines already modernized interface that was released months ago

Another one that was made recently by a user: https://news.ycombinato.com/
That's an interesting nested comments visualization with it getting darker. I would guess it's stacked alpha instead of different colors.
I was about to share the same thing, can only recommend Modern for Hacker News!
You can checkout this repo and see if something is more appealing to you: https://github.com/cheeaun/awesome-hacker-news

I personally just use Stylus and have a custom css for making things a bit more readable and user friendly.

There's also this extension that just refines a couple things: https://github.com/plibither8/refined-hacker-news

Thanks for the suggestions, https://github.com/cheeaun/awesome-hacker-news is indeed great. Although I prefer not to install a chrome extension.

I was thinking something similar to alternative frontends for youtube which already exit.

Not alternative, but enhanced: https://github.com/raszpl/hackahackernews
I mostly use curl, much easier than such a painful app like a browser
As a privacy concerned user, I print Hacker News stories I'm interested in, and then POST replies.

Though as my printer was made in Sweden, it sometimes just prints a page saying "Sorry." with a 403 header as HN sometimes blocks privacy focused people.

A printer made in Sweden? O_o
There are a bunch of apps on the app store too.
