So at what point does a sensor of some kind that does some computation become 'AI'? Is this just marketing buzzword bandwagoning?

By going backwards in time — I'd guess sometime between 2010 and 1995.

I sometimes joke that at some point humans cease to be considered intelligent too.
A more precise term might be "computer vision," which is indeed a field of AI, but it is a less-known term even among a reasonably technical laypeople (such as might be reading a business publication like the MIT Tech Review).
