The average person isn't aware of how endemic racism and abuse of indigenous people by the police and government is in the US and Canada. It's obviously not certain that racism was a factor in this case, but the assumption is anything but ridiculous or unhinged. If you aren't white, malice always has to be a factor to consider in any interaction with the American or Canadian government. |
