To break even at the box office, you need to make at least 2.5x your production budget (so $500M for Lightyear). It's very unlikely that they were able to close the gap with streaming - the movie lost a ton of money. The 2.5x multiple is because the production budget doesn't include marketing costs (which can easily be as high as the production budget) as well as the fact that they only get a percentage of the box office (the movie theaters need to live too). This is especially true for the non US box office, where the percentage going back to the studio is lower than in the US |
