The thing that's hard to predict from health is that even people unhealthy and disabled generally find life worth living. It's easy to say you'll kill yourself when "the time comes" but when you get there you will simply realize the time hasn't come yet. You can't know until you're there of course but very very few people choose suicide when experiencing disability, despite how popular this sentiment is among the healthy. It's much more realistic, and vulnerable, to accept that the time when you are healthy and able is only a fraction of your life. You won't die when that part is over, you will probably have many years left to be with people, and in a world, you will have come to care about. You can choose to die then but why. Disability, frailty, and decline are as much a part of life as the vigor and foolishness of youth are. You deny part of your humanity by rejecting that. |
