Capitalists want a return on their capital. Spotify committed the original sin of taking VC money, which has no endgame besides IPO'ing. And once you IPO, you're at the mercy of Wall St. They never made a sustainable business by licensing music, and thus see podcasts as free real estate they can monetize without having to bay Universal, Warner, Atlantic etc. |
