I have personally the opposite experience, I used to not have driving license, bike 30-40 minutes or 5 minutes walk + 25 minutes bus every half hour to catch the subway.

Public transport is very slow and exhausting when you don't live in the center near a subway station or very frequent bus. Once I got a car, it felt like so much more peaceful to travel. I could carry my guitar and amp with no problem.

Overall car is way less stressful and exhausting to me, even when traffic is slow I can just listen to music with better confort than a bus.

Uber did cabs better... can they do an equivalent for public transit?

I can see automated car replacing the need for personal car for some people indeed, if it makes the taxi even cheaper in slightly dense areas.
