I was unaware that this collaboration was underway, but I just installed K-9 a week or two ago after several years away and was impressed by how much smoother it was compared with my previous experience with it. Fantastic to see the progress!

Same! I knew Thunderbird was going to be on Android eventually, but I didn't know it was done via taking over the K-9 project.

Have installed it for now and it doesn't look too bad. Has definitely moved forward from the K-9 days years ago. Will keep an eye on the development.
