Drug cartels are pretty innovative and practice a lot of the same techniques when it comes to building out one’s business. They just operate in a legal environment where being cut throat is a bit more literal than say, ousting your board chairman with no notice

Yup. And organized crime is, in general, entrepreneurship with relaxed legal constraints. A lot of the structures and activities of criminal organizations are just running a business in a much more high-risk environment, due to inability to stay within, and therefore fully leverage the legal system (i.e. your competitors can't sue you, so instead they'll shoot you up).
