In terms of quality, hardware suffers also problems due to increasing complexity. Errata sheets of highend SoCs can be rather intimidating on their own already. And it is this complexity which drags down performance as well. If a smartphone app is nothing else than a glorified web browser showing some heavy javascript riddled abonimation you don't need to wonder why the things are sluggish and memory hogs to boot.
