I'm a pretty fast typist (also guitarist - maybe related?), and I did a speed test with my coworkers for shits and giggles not long ago. I got 110wpm with 100% accuracy although it was a fairly simple prompt. Some semicolons, commas, and quotations, but nothing crazy. I would definitely say it feels like I am typing nearly (but not quite) as fast as most people speak. The benefit for me is honestly handicapped by the fact that most people can't type that fast so I don't save any time when actually communicating with others since I have to wait for their response either way. That being said, I don't think I would code anywhere near that fast. Maybe years later when I'm far better at it than I am now. I probably type around 60-70wpm if I'm writing some basic SQL where I know what I'm looking for, I would guess. When I was in college, it definitely was helpful being able to type quickly so that I could workshop ideas and phrase structures in papers more or less in real time. I honestly almost never wrote drafts, I'd just revise as I went along in that fashion. |
