What is some distro that's closest to Ubuntu in terms of setup but doesn't force snaps and stupid regressions like this, while having good package repos? Thinking about wiping it off my laptop because it looks like I would be burned by jumping early into 23.10

Debian. Ubuntu has always just been downstream of Debian, patching things that were annoying at the intersection of proprietary and open source.

We're at a relative nadir of that gap at the moment, so Debian is definitely the way to go.

Thanks, I'll probably go with that
I quit Ubuntu for Debian.

It works for what I need: What I need: Browser (Firefox), Email (Thunderbird), Notes (Zettlr) + Reference (JabRef), Python, Postgres, Shell, occasional LibreOffice, the odd podcast (gPodder) and feeds (Liferea), very occasional audio and video editing.

What do you need?

Out of things you listed, browser. Dev tools and such I usually set up via docker.
Pop_os! perhaps
Mint?
