Similar to the effect of wearing one earplug or one headphone/IEM: when one ear is exposed to much louder sound than the other, the combined exposure across both ears doesn't trigger the natural protective mechanism [0] to the degree that it would be triggered if that same level of exposure was applied to both ears, so the one ear gets totally wrecked.
