We also have a lot of things made of wood. They can last 100s of years if well taken care of. It’s inevitable that nature learns to break down plastic, just like it did with wood (there was a long period where trees didn’t biodegrade). I think it’s a good thing if we help accelerate that. It’s the only way to make sure microplastic pollution doesn’t become an increasingly large problem. Yeah, we should reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in nature to begin with. But getting to 0% is impossible. And plastics are too useful to not use them at all. The impact on nature would be worse, since the replacements often use more resources. |
